A webinar presented by the IBA Pro Bono Committee

During instances and times of crisis, pro bono professionals play a particularly central role in ensuring the continuation, and in some cases the extension, of pro bono legal services. Often these are novel situations which involve multiple jurisdictions and occasionally, are also politically sensitive.

There is much to learn from those who lead on, and coordinate, pro bono work in different jurisdictions, especially the creative methods they use to address different and/or increased legal needs during times of crisis.

As this is an extensive topic of conversation, the focus will be on three strategies: the use of digital innovation, inter- and intra-firm collaboration, and pro bono associations.

Rather than formal presentations, the panellists will briefly introduce their use of a select strategy, followed by a healthy exchange of practical experiences and the use of these strategies in other contexts and under challenging situations.

The contributions from the panelists will include the following topics, among others:

• the use of online platforms;

• the development of the Pro Bono Portal and its use in managing crises such as the Australian bush-fire response;

• techniques for managing a project across multiple cultures within one firm;

• setting up and managing multi-firm pro bono collaborations, e.g. the Greece Pro Bono Collaborative for asylum seekers in Lesvos; and

• the impact of organisations such as the Association of Pro Bono Counsel and the Cyrus R Vance Center for international justice.
