The third IBA webcast of 2015 featured José Ugaz, Chair of Transparency International (TI), and was broadcast live on 10 June. Ugaz is one of the world’s leading anti-corruption lawyers, During his time as Ad Hoc Attorney General of Peru, Ugaz prosecuted hundreds of government officials. He led the corruption case against the former President of Peru, Alberto Fujimori, who is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence.
This panel explores the contours of universal jurisdiction and the practical implications of its use, using trials and investigations of crimes in multiple countries as case studies of its application.
IBA Annual Conference Miami 2022
The Regulation of Lawyers Committee provides a global perspective on practical and legal aspects of the growing body of regulation affecting all lawyers (whether individual lawyers, firms, in-house lawyers or those who work for clients) as well as current professional risk management topics and compliance issues affecting lawyers around the world. The Anti-Money Laundering and Sanctions Expert Subcommittee focuses on anti-money laundering requirements and financial and trade sanctions legislation, regulation and trends as they impacts lawyers. The Committee provide a forum to discuss and consider legislation impacting the practice of law, considering the ever-expanding multi-jurisdictional approach to lawyer regulation.
In early December, after a 20-month legal standoff, Budapest’s most prestigious university announced it would be relocating to Vienna. The decision marks the end of a dispute with the Hungarian government over the university’s legal status, following changes to the higher education laws - part of a continuing assault on fundamental freedoms.
Litigating in the Asia Pacific Region
The Rule of Law Forum, established in 2007, supports IBA members in advocating for the Rule of Law, as per the 2005 Prague Resolution. Originally the Rule of Law Action Group, the Forum operates within the Section on Public and Professional Interest (SPPI). Its purpose is to assist members in responding to the IBA Council's call to support the Rule of Law in their communities. The Forum's activities are led by Co-Chairs, with Vice-Chairs assisting them. The Forum does not have formal membership but maintains a circulation list. Liaison members from other IBA committees help integrate Rule of Law into their work.

More countries than ever before are using domestic laws to prosecute perpetrators of atrocity crimes committed outside of their borders under the principle of universal jurisdiction – including as a result of the war in Ukraine.
All IBA officers of sections, committees and fora are invited to attend this Q&A session on how to be a successful officer, best-practices guides by fellow officers, and the opportunity to network with other committee officers.

Membership of the Forum is open to judges of all levels of court and seniority, whether exercising general or special jurisdiction, and including part-time retired judges. It is hoped that members of the IBA who have been active in its committees and constituents while in practice as lawyers will find in the Judges' Forum an additional means of maintaining their involvement after appointment or election to the Bench.
The activities of the Forum are normally concentrated on organisation of sessions at the Annual Conferences of the IBA. It has been the practice in recent years for those sessions to be co-sponsored with other IBA committees and constituents, dealing with subjects of mutual interest such as litigation, education, ethics and elimination of bias. The Forum also produces an ad hoc newsletter; contributions are encouraged.

For too long, perpetrators have escaped incarceration and accountability by hiding away for the authority seeking to punish them. Universal jurisdiction allows states or international organisations to claim criminal jurisdiction over an accused person, regardless of where the alleged crime was committed and irrespective of the accused's nationality.

The Leisure Industries Section started as the Travel Law Section and addressed the needs of travel law practitioners serving the travel industries. It grew to merge with the Tourism and Sports and Gaming sections expanding in its scope to provide a specialist network of professionals in the leisure industries.
The Section recognises that lawyers who work in the leisure industries often practice in one of the more traditional legal fields (aviation, property, finance, maritime, intellectual property, employment, litigation, conflict of laws, consumer law, insurance and trade law). The Section provides a focused forum on issues which emerge due to the greater amount of leisure time available and the increased internationalisation of sports and gaming.

Tools for justice and accountability: universal criminal jurisdiction over enforced disappearances
The International Commerce and Distribution Committee examines legal issues fundamental to the growth and development of international commerce.
The Committee deals extensively with issues relating to international sales contracts, agency and distribution, cross-border acquisitions, warranties and financing of international sales.
In addition to reviewing the current legal position in different countries from a comparative perspective, the committee also examines international and supranational instruments, such as the United Nations Convention on the International Sale of Goods, Incoterms and the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits and relevant instruments of the European Union and Mercosur.
The Committee also focuses on law reform in the fields of law within its scope, and since 1997 has monitored and offered suggestions in connection with the proposed Hague Convention on International Jurisdiction and the Effects of Foreign judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters.

This webcast and audience Q&A with Funke Abimbola, General Counsel of Roche UK, explored the corporate compliance challenges facing the leading biotech company and the evolving role of in-house lawyers.
The interview examined the legal aspects of supporting Roche’s pharmaceutical R&D and healthcare strategies, addressing issues such as company operations, risk management, and diversity in the profession. The interview was conducted by the BBC's Sally Bundock.
The escalation of Russia's war in Ukraine has united many actors in the international community in seeking a path to criminal accountability for the crimes being committed– including through supporting prosecutions in Ukrainian courts; prosecutions in third states, including under universal jurisdiction; and an ongoing investigation by the International Criminal Court. These efforts have included a number of innovations, including tech-forward investigations and NGO-coordinated documentation efforts. Following a November 2022 UN General Assembly resolution, efforts are also underway to develop a reparations programme for losses sustained as a result of the conflict.
On this panel, we first discuss the accountability efforts in Ukraine, looking particularly at how they are serving victims, including victims of sexual violence and children.

The Committee aims to provide its members, and the Division as a whole, with information about developments in insurance and reinsurance law and markets throughout the world as well as with specialist knowledge to assist in the efficient solution of practical insurance problems. New insurance products are also brought to the attention of members.
In the previous two UPR cycles (2010 and 2015), Turkey committed to strengthen the independence of the judiciary and accepted all recommendations made in that respect, but these have not to date been implemented.

IBA Annual Conference Paris 2023
The Forum for Barristers and Advocates represents Bar Associations whose members practice as independent referral practitioners in jurisdictions with a divided legal profession. Formed by Bar Leaders, the Forum advocates for the principles of independent advocacy within the IBA. The Forum addresses the importance of advocate and judiciary independence, ethical conduct, and training. The Forum supports human rights and collaborates with the Judges' Forum and other committees on litigation and trial topics. The Forum’s inaugural members include Bar Associations from England and Wales, Scotland, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, and Hong Kong, representing over 16,000 barristers and advocates. Membership is open to bar associations which are full or supporting members of the IBA, and to individual members of any Divisions.
The second IBA webcast of 2015 featured James Palmer, Senior Partner of Herbert Smith Freehills, and was broadcast live on 24 April. Discussion covered law firm management and strategy, and corporate governance among other themes.
During the motion the panellists will discuss the pros and cons of the two approaches.
The second motion will be: ‘this house believes that foreign investors receive adequate protection from investor-state arbitration when investing in Latin America’.

The IBAHRI opposes and condemns the death penalty without exception. We have actively called for its abolition since our 2008 Resolution on the Abolition of the Death Penalty. Capital punishment is a barbaric practice that does not serve justice in any manner. We call on states to abolish the death penalty without delay in line with the growing global trend towards abolition
The session will explore how the rules and practice of international trade are evolving, as reflected in the expanded use of trade defence tools such as trade remedies, safeguards, unilateral tariffs and countermeasures, the return of managed trade arrangements and the reordering of global trading blocs.

The International Bar Association (IBA), the CEELI Institute and the Center for International Law & Policy in Africa (CILPA) have released a joint statement outlining 12 recommendations for strengthening the effective implementation of universal jurisdiction to support justice and accountability for international crimes.
The role of the courts in arbitration: an Asia Pacific perspective
The Forum for Government and Public Lawyers provides a platform for government and public lawyers worldwide. As the global voice of the legal profession, the IBA supports these lawyers and connects them with both public and private sector practitioners. The Forum focuses on the role of government and public lawyers, covering public service values, ethics, specialist skills, and public international law developments. Membership is open to Bar Associations that are IBA members and individual members of any Division. The Forum is especially relevant to practitioners working in government or public entities at domestic, regional, or international levels.
A delegation from the APDC and the Young Lawyers’ Committee visited Sungkyunkwan University during the IBA Annual Conference 2019 in Seoul. The Dean, Professor Kim, and members of his faculty explained the Korean legal system and the work of the School of Law and answered the delegation’s questions. The delegation had the opportunity to present to a small group of students on the work of the IBA and on the essential requirements for a successful career in law.
RuleOfLawFrom the outset of the pandemic, barristers and advocates recognised and were supportive of the attenuations to the justice system, which were necessary to ensure that justice could be delivered in the circumstances, which prevailed. In that context, it was accepted that remote hearings were necessary to ensure that system of justice continued to function. These remote hearings and other arrangements were however introduced as part of an emergency response.

Participants will gain practical knowledge which will enable them to deliver a better service to clients in their own jurisdiction. Equally, when consulted by clients who were injured in other jurisdictions, on ships, on aircraft or elsewhere, the committee activities provide information and networking opportunities with colleagues which will enable lawyers to undertake such cases on an international basis.
Negligence and Damages are evolving fields of law in many jurisdictions. The committee seeks to equip its members with the ability to understand and influence these changes in the legal environment.
